Gone Paddling
NEW BOOK RELEASE
A comprehensive description of Richard Barnes’ historic kayak journey from Australia to New Zealand is a feature of a new edition of the book Gone Paddling. It is the first published account of the whole saga, from the initial decision to attempt the cross-Tasman paddle through to design, build and sea trials, then the first attempted crossing (wiped out by Cyclone Seth) and ultimately the successful triumphant trip.
Barnes describes in great detail the complete venture which is illustrated with outstanding pictures. All aspects of the trip are covered meticulously, from being seasick to coping with loneliness, from how he desalinated water by pedalling to how many thousand paddle strokes he took each day (and how many million for the whole trip).
His story, one of a collection by adventurous kayakers in Lane Cove River Kayakers club, is given lengthy coverage in Gone Paddling because of its significance. The book also describes Lane Cove’s development into a major club which has become a dominant force in marathon paddling.
Gone Paddling is available from LCRK and costs $26 plus postage. It can be ordered by emailing your name + postal address & quantity to gonepaddling@lcrk.org.au - you will be provided details for an EFT payment.
All copies of the book, which would make an excellent Christmas gift, are signed by Barnes and the author, Justin Paine, an LCRK Life Member.
