LCRKers and the 2015 Hawkesbury Canoe Classic

Saturday 24 and Sunday 25 October 2015

'The Classic' was Started by NSW Outward Bound Ex Students Association in 1977. It runs overnight close to the full moon in late October or early November and starts at Windsor and finishes at Mooney Mooney. In 1977 the race had 250 paddlers and raised $8,500 for the Arrow Foundation and has now grown to over 600 paddlers and raises over $300,000 per year. Those paddlers just wanting to have a fun and social evening can enter the Brooklyn or Bust classes whilst the more competitive paddlers challenge themselves to beat previous records or their own PB's.

This year's LCRK presence at the HCC is being coordinated by Paul van Koesveld and Tom Holloway

2015 HCC 'Calculator'

LCRK is please to provide this Microsoft Excel based 'calculator' which is preloaded with 24-25 October 2015 tides all the way up to Windsor and incorporating associated tidal and riverine flows. To use, download the tool, open up Excel, adjust ONLY the yellow shaded cells ie:-

  1. Update your Windsor start time
  2. Update your expected base speed (either constant for whole 100km, or you can slow yourself down as your energy flags)
  3. Adjust your expected stop time (eg if it's 1/2hr then enter as =0.5/24 to keep excel happy!)
  4. The calculator will then derive your ETA at respective checkpoints, including adjustments for current.
  5. The course map (separate worksheet) will be automatically updated and can be printed out on a single A4 page for you &/or your landcrew.
  6. Print out different versions eg at 9km/h, 10km/h, 11km/h base speed - you'll know by your first stop which one you should be using!
  7. Note that whilst there's a bit of science behind this tool - there are many other variables in play including wind, how you use the currents etc. Use the tool in conjunction with all your planning.

Download the calculator(this will undergo some post-HCC tuning based on actual GPS experience)

For those wanting more detail. The new calculator identifies tides at Fort Denison (HH, LL, H, L), then adjusts that tide all the way up to Windsor some 5-7 hours later. Current patterns have been modelled for 3 sections of the river (between stops) using data from MHL, DPW etc. Your ETA at a particular checkpoint is adjusted based on your base paddle speed and the anticipated current at the time you are travelling. Short or long stops will affect the tide you catch (or are caught by). Further fine tuning CAN be done - but no point over-engineering it, you might be affected by winds, unplanned swims etc. Good luck!

2015 Hawkesbury River "Famils" for paid-up LCRK Members

  • Famil 1: Sunday 9 August, 8:15 arrival for 9:00am start Finish to Spencer and Return 25km+ Organiser: Duncan Johnstone - "16 happy paddlers completed Famil 1"
  • Famil 2: Sunday 23 August, 9:00am Wisemans to Spencer One Way (car shuffle required), 30km+ Organiser: Tom Holloway
  • Famil 3: Sunday 20 September, 9:00am Windsor to Sackville One Way (car shuffle required), 30km+
  • Famil 4: Sunday 11 October, 9:00am 'Sackville to Wisemans One Way (car shuffle required), 30km+

We're doing them in this order as opposed to race order to better match the tides at HCC.

More details on each to follow in due course. Please advise us if you're joining in prior to each of them.

NOTE 1: one-way paddles popularly requested give a better understanding of the Hawkesbury River but require participation in car shuffles. Road distances for these selected three one-way paddles are reasonable but car shuffles still take time. Don’t sleep in. NOTE 2: some of the stronger paddlers are expected to add some more distance at the front of Famils 2 - 4.

Wednesday evening, 2 x 12km Night Paddling "Famils"; "do the time trial then just keep going"

  • 19 August
  • 16 September
  • 30 September
  • 21 October (taper period: a bit more than 12km only)

Note: only the first 12km is timed but make sure you sign in for the 2x12km beforehand so we can track you during your second 12km.

The Myall Classic (47km or 27km events) on the Myall River will top off your training http://www.paddlensw.org.au/event/2015-myall-classic

LCRK Achievements at the HCC

HCC - Commonwealth Bank Cup

The Commonwealth Bank Cup competition was started in 1988 to encourage friendly competition between kayak clubs. Clubs accumulate points based on a formula of kilometers paddled, number of finishers and how close representatives come to current class records.

LCRK has had an excellent history in the Cup, winning it 18 years out of the 24 years it has been running.

LCRK Commonwealth Cup wins;

  • 2010 - 2014
  • 2003 - 2008
  • 1990 - 1999 (as Lane Cove Valley Canoe Club)

HCC - Current Class Record Holders

LCRK members past and present currently hold over 20 class records.
